When to see a Paediatric Physiotherapist
The types of movement disorders or movement difficulties paediatric physiotherapists can help with are numerous, and they include:
- Babies who look more to one side (head turn preference or torticollis) or who’s skull is flattened (plagiocephaly/brachycephaly)
- Babies and children who are slower to achieve their motor milestones, for example babies who are late to learn to craw or walk. But also babies who do not enjoy tummy time
- Babies and children who are using unusual patterns to move like w-sitting, bottom shuffling or toe walking
- Children who are having difficulty with gross motor skills, such as running, jumping, hopping or ball skills
- Children who have difficulty with fine motor skills like stacking blocks, using scissors or who have poor handwriting
- Children with behavioural and learning disorders like Autism Spectrum Disorder or sensory processing disorders
- Children with disabilities such as Cerebral Calsy, Down Syndrome, Spinal Bifida, acquired brain injury, muscular dystrophies like Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, or other congenital syndromes or conditions
- Babies and children with conditions affecting their bones, joints or muscles, such as clubfoot, flat feet, overly flexible or dislocating joints, scoliosis or congenital conditions such as Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome or common musculoskeletal issues like Sever’s Disease or Legg-Calve-Perthes
- Children who have rheumatological and pain conditions such as arthritis, myositis, or chronic pain
- Children following an (sport) injury or trauma who require rehabilitation
- Children with chronic respiratory conditions such as cystic fibrosis or asthma
- Children rehabilitating during and after cancer treatment
- Children with bowel and bladder dysfunction who have problems staying dry during the day or night, or who experience constipation
- Children who are overweight and need to change their lifestyle and become more active
